The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is one of the
most popular and prestigious graduate degrees available. There are
over 1250 MBA programs available worldwide with new ones offered practically
monthly. Over 60% of
America’s MBA programs saw applications rise this year, with many reporting
surges of over 20 percent or more. There are currently almost 300,000
students pursuing the degree in the U.S. alone. Over 95,000 Americans will
earn their MBA this year.
Financial compensation packages offered to those
graduating from top echelon schools are escalating rapidly. At top-tier
schools, total compensation--including the signing bonuses and full tuition
reimbursement that some consulting firms and investment banks now
offer--routinely tops six figures. Wharton's 1999 median pay package hit
$142,000, possibly the highest total of any U.S. business school.
Starting salaries for newly graduated MBAs have been
soaring this year, reports Business Week in its July 6 issue. They noted an
increase in earnings of 7-9% compared to 1997 graduates with an average
graduate salary of $90,000.
Most MBA programs are based around full-time
students, and almost half of all MBA students now study part-time for their
degree. Part-time and distance learning MBAs now form the fastest
growing sector of the MBA market.
Courses generally rely on self-study materials,
presented in various written and audio-visual formats. These are usually
supplemented by support help via phone, fax or online along with some
seminar visits, and occasional weekend and summer sessions.
PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION
Universal agreement on course content is lacking allowing
each school to develop its own program. In the U.S. the American Assembly Of
Collegiate Schools Of Business (AACSB - www.aacsb.edu) accredits business
programs that meet their specific criteria. They currently accredit
approximately 270 of the almost 1,000 MBA programs in the United States. The
best known "B" schools (Wharton, Stanford, etc) are all AACSB accredited.
Another accrediting agency for business schools is the
Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Although
generally seen as having less "clout" than AACSB, it is still valued by
many.
The counterpart to the American AACSB in Europe is AMBA,
The Association of MBAs."
Some schools however, including some of the leading ones,
are not members of either of these accrediting agencies by choice or because
they offer courses differing in content and, or methodology.
Determine which MBA program is best for you and your
unique career goals.
1. Does the School have a good reputation?
2. Does the School help graduates get good jobs in
good companies?
3. Does the MBA offer the right blend of core and
elective subjects for you?
4. Are the fees and tuition affordable?
5. Does the School use teaching methods which are suited
to your style of learning?

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS
All Schools expect you to have sufficient demonstrable
academic skills to undertake a postgraduate course. However, many schools
prefer that the student also have a few years of management experience prior
to admission.
Most Schools demand a good GMAT examination score (some
use the GRE or MAT instead) and examine carefully both the work experience
and academic achievements of potential students.
A bachelor’s degree in a business area is usually not
required. In fact over half of all MBA candidates have no academic business
background whatsoever. However, there are common prerequisite courses that
will have to be taken prior to taking the core courses. Students with a
business degree will usually have taken these courses already, saving both
time and money over those who have not taken them.
In some cases schools that are not AACSB accredited do
not require these prerequisites. These will usually have a lower academic
reputation in the U.S. News and Business Week rankings and the academic
community as well.
GMAT
This worldwide test evaluates the suitability of candidates for postgraduate
studies, including MBAs. The vast majority of MBA schools, around 850
worldwide, consider the GMAT as an essential requirement for obtaining
admission. The admission standards vary considerably from school to school.
You’ll need to check the requirements for each school you’re interested in.
Oftentimes they set-up a formula using your test scores multiplied by your
GPA.
Go to the following Web address for further information
on test content, pricing, preparation guides, etc. (http://www.gmat.org/).
Another source to consider for testing is
http://www.test.com.
ADMISSION WITHOUT A BACHELOR’S DEGREE
There are a number of schools that allow admission into
their MBA program without an undergraduate degree. This is typically waived
based on a minimum number of years of managerial experience. The following
eleven schools offer such an option:
* Athabasca University
* Durham University
* Henley Management College
* Heriot-Watt University
* Leicester University
* Open University
* Regent University (require 90 hours undergraduate work)
* Royal Roads University
* University of Notre Dame
* University of Pittsburg
* Warwick Business School
COMPARISON GUIDES
The following schools offer distance degree MBA programs. There are three
different tables with specific information so you can compare the various
options available. More information on each school can be found in Chapter

The cost is estimated assuming you do not have to
take prerequisite courses. Tuition will be higher if you do have to take
these courses.
Don’t eliminate yourself if you don’t meet the stated
requirements. These are not written in stone and flexibility is common. Most
schools use an indexing method where they multiply your GPA times the GMAT,
taking into account your work experience, etc. Oftentimes a student can be
admitted on a probationary basis to ensure the program is within one’s
ability.
