CHAPTER 4 (pt 1 of 3)

ABOUT ACCREDITATION

Understanding the accreditation behind the school you choose is critical.  All too often, people who earned non valid degrees subsequently lose their position in the work place.  You do not want this to happen to you by being tricked by a phony 'diploma mill.'

Accreditation is the recognition or validation of a specific institution by an impartial source. It is a uniquely American phenomenon. Educational institutions in most countries are controlled by the government and all are "accredited" because they are government run. Becoming accredited is a voluntary process in the U.S. which entails review of facilities, faculty, curriculum, library size, financial records, etc.

You cannot rely on the written or verbal statement from a prospective school that they are accredited. In and of itself that statement is meaningless. The key question is, "Which regional accrediting agency are you accredited by?"

The following four terms determine the legal status of a school:

1. ACCREDITED: There are two primary sources of

accreditation.

The first is governmental:
Accrediting Agency Evaluation Branch
Higher Education Management Services
Office of Postsecondary Education
U.S. Department of Education
Washington, DC 20202
(202) 708-7417

The second is private:

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)
One Dupont Circle NW, Suite 510
Washington, DC 20036
(202) 955-6126
www.chea.org
Both of these agencies fully recognize any school accredited by one of the six regional accrediting boards listed later in this chapter. If your school is accredited by one of these six you will have no problem transferring your credits to any other institution and your degree will be nationally recognized as authentic.

2. APPROVED: (NOTE: This information is in a state of flux due to the current state of disarray in the California Legislature.)

Schools that are authorized to operate in a given state have state-approval. California is the only state that has "approved" institutions. Schools with state approval will probably not have their credits accepted by regionally accredited schools. If you plan to transfer from a state approved school to another regionally accredited school it is imperative that you check to see whether or not the credits are transferable? If you plan to get an undergraduate degree at an "approved" school and go on to graduate school, the same question must be asked. Otherwise you may find yourself locked-out of schools you are interested in.

3. AUTHORIZED: This is tantamount to granting a legal license to operate within a certain state. It is the minimum requirement of any school you choose to attend.

4. DIPLOMA MILLS: These are illegal schools that essentially sell worthless paper. Your entire future is in trouble if you fall for their deception.   Bear's Guide, in puplication for 25 years now,  exposes these fake schools.

STATE ACCREDITATION AGENCIES

State accreditation agencies are responsible for licensing or certifying public school teachers and accrediting the curricula used in teacher education classes. Should you have questions regarding a particular school or program within their jurisdiction, simply call for information.

The first listing for each state is the primary education agency. The second listing is for the federally required SPRE (State Postsecondary Review Entity) program. The purpose is to provide monitoring of compliance with federal law. They also can research any school for any reason whatsoever and may also have information.
