| How To be a Mystery Shopper |
|
|
| You probably already have a pretty good idea of what a Mystery Shopper is. If you said, "It's a person that gets paid to secretly visit selected establishments to spy on them," ... you're half right. Actually, as a Mystery Shopper you do secretly visit selected establishments, but you are not there to spy on them. You are not trying to catch them doing something wrong. In fact, you're not even looking for something right. When you go into a store, restaurant, theme park, or on a cruise ship - or any business that values their customers, you are there for only one reason ... to evaluate your experience. Okay, then why all the secrecy? Well, look at it this way. Do you think you would get the same service and treatment from a salesperson who knew you were there to evaluate him or her? Chances are you wouldn't. We both know you'd probably get the "Red Carpet" treatment. Your objective is to go into a store and be treated as any other "everyday customer". Thus the secrecy. As a Mystery Shopper you will
receive many Free benefits. Free merchandise is only one. Dine at the
finest restaurants, see the latest movies, take trips, cruises ... the
possibilities are endless.
By that I mean ... you may not
receive an offer on every job interview, and likewise you may not receive
an offer from every manufacturer, travel agency, restaurant, etc., you
apply to. But just like a job interview, if you're turned down for some
reason, don't take it personally. Just go on to your next source. Many businesses operate from the
top floor of an ivory tower, and have absolutely no idea how their
customers are being treated. |
| How To Be A Mystery Shopper |
They have stores all over the country and you as a Mystery Shopper
would perform a valuable service in keeping them in touch with their customers'
needs. By having you (the average customer), report on your shopping experience,
corporate leaders can better achieve uniformity throughout their chains.
They are acutely aware that cleanliness, service and the quality of their
products are essential to their success and growth.
If you take on your assignment with a professional attitude, and
give Headquarters your loyalty by not revealing your findings to any other
source - whether friends, competitors or other Marketing research companies, you
can have a profitable, trusting, long lasting working relationship with them.
So remember, only report your findings to the company that is paying
you!
Name your own hours
If you are a housewife, mother, retiree, or part time worker, you will
have the option of working around your schedule - unless you're required to be
at a certain establishment at a precise time and day ... which is unusual. The
exception would be if you were requested to visit an establishment only during
happy hour, early bird specials, moonlight madness sales, etc.
If you're a parent with small children in pre-school or working
part-time in another job, you can most likely request certain hours that are
best for you.
Remember ...
you are the link that keeps
Corporate Headquarters informed!

Chapter 2 |
| There are many companies that hire and place Mystery Shoppers. The most important thing you can do to insure your Mystery Shopper status is to do your homework. Present yourself as a well organized and informed applicant. Being listed with a reputable Marketing Research company is your best way to enter the Mystery Shopper arena. But once again, don't overlook the option of contacting the manufacturers yourself. Chances are they will refer you to a preferred marketing research company ... but you never know. They might just recruit you on the spot! You can use the list located at the back of this book to locate Marketing Research companies who hire Mystery Shoppers. But don't stop there. Continued research is your key to success in becoming a Mystery Shopper. Your local library and yellow pages directory are two excellent sources in locating marketing research companies. Once you have decided on the marketing research companies you want to register with, send them a resume', along with a photograph. The photo need not be of professional quality. A good clear Polaroid snapshot will do just fine (See a sample of a resume' in Chapter 8). You should also include a cover letter telling them what times
you are available (See a sample of a cover letter in
Chapter 8). I also suggest you include a
local or state map of the areas you would like to work. Give specifics in
your cover letter. For example, if you prefer to only evaluate movie
theaters, let them know. |
| How To Be A Mystery Shopper |
| As a Mystery Shopper, there are many areas you can work in. For example, you don't have to take assignments for a computer store, if you have absolutely no knowledge of computers. The list in Chapter 6 will give you an idea of places that use Mystery Shoppers. Again, the list is not all inclusive. Use your imagination to think of other manufacturers and companies that would have a need for your services as a mystery Shopper. Remember ... You are under no pressure to accept an assignment. Don't be afraid to say no if you don't feel comfortable with an assignment. If you don't drink alcoholic beverages, let them know ahead of time. They will do their best to not place you in assignments that require drinking. After you have mailed your cover letter, resume'
and photograph to the marketing research companies, sit back and wait for
an acceptance phone call or letter in the mail. It may take two or three
weeks for an answer and in some cases even up to two or three months.
Your questionnaire could have 20, 30 or more questions to review. For example, you might be asked:
|
| How To Be A Mystery Shopper |
|
|
After you complete the steps in the previous chapter, there's not a
lot of work left. However, you will be required to complete the questionnaire
within a short time of your evaluation - usually 24 to 48 hours.
Note: While completing your questionnaire, it is extremely important that you be as accurate as possible.
For example, say you were assigned to eat at a restaurant, and you had to wait a long time before being seated. After 30 minutes or so, you finally get seated...right next to the kitchen. By the time your food arrives you are not in a real good mood. On top of that, you feel the waiter has a real dislike for you. All in all, your meal is less than a pleasant experience.
So, do you put all the above grievances in your report? Absolutely not...unless your questionnaire specifically asked you to address them! Remember, in writing your report, you must adhere strictly to the questions they are asking and interject no personal thoughts of your experience unless asked.
You can't express your annoyance at being kept waiting, or the less than desirable table you were given...unless those questions are asked on your questionnaire. If your waiter's nose ring annoyed you, don't express your dissatisfaction unless you're asked in the questionnaire.
| How To Be A Mystery Shopper |
The minute you get back to your car, take a few minutes to jot down some notes in your note pad. Later, when you fill out the actual questionnaire, you will be referring to your notes extensively. Also, make sure you keep your sales receipt. You will need to turn it in for reimbursement of your purchase.
If you are unsure how to answer a question, call the company for details. If you're asked to call within a certain time, make every effort to comply. If they ask you to fax or mail your questionnaire in, you must adhere to the time allotted for response. If for some reason you can't respond on time, call the company immediately and let them know why.
Once you've made a copy of your questionnaire for your records, and turned in your paper work (including your sales receipt), you are done.
All you have to do now is wait a few days for your reimbursement check
in the mail and start thinking of where you would like to shop next!

There are many ways you can go about finding work as a Mystery Shopper. Here are just a few ideas:
1. Look for ads in your local newspaper.
2. Go to the Internet and search "Mystery Shoppers."
3. Contact Marketing and Research companies in your area.
4. Ask your friends ... some may already be Mystery Shoppers.
But here is the Best Way ...
In Chapter 9
I list 200 companies that hire Mystery Shoppers. Send them a letter along with
your resume', or simply contact them on line for application information.
Keep in mind that I have done everything possible to keep the Contact
Sources List current. However, in this fast-paced world, businesses come and
go, so some on the list may be obsolete by the time you read this report.
I will be updating the Contact Source list periodically, and if you
would like to receive the updates, just send me an email at:

word "Mystery Shopper Update" in the subject line. Fair enough?
